- Put your best foot forward; as much as possible, put all the amazing achievements and career highlights at the top half of your resume. If you do this, you get the employer’s attention right away.
- Don’t add a career objective; if I may ask, what exactly is your objective, asides landing the job? This item is simply outdated and tells the obvious and therefore do not include any carer objective in your resume.
- Is your email address professional? I hope you don’t have email addresses that go way back to the early 2000s. If I see email@example.com on your resume, I may make an assumption that you are not serious. Once should never make assumptions but sometimes people are forced to make some assumptions based on the facts that they know. Create an account using your name or its variations.
- Triple check your contact info; you can’t afford to have a wrong email address or phone number.
- Highlight important info to make it easy for recruiters to skim. They spend an average of 6 seconds on a resume.
- Use simple Canadian English language; you’re not trying to confuse anyone or send them to a dictionary, are you?
- Use relevant keywords as found on the job description.
- Include more of your achievements; more of what you’ve done and not where you’ve been.
- “References available on request” is not necessary; you’re already expected to have references for when they are needed.
- Express your personality; this is often shown in soft skills and Canadian employers are interested in who you are as much as they are in what you’re offering.
Formatting related tips
- Don’t go beyond two pages; no one actually has the time to go through your life’s history. Stay within the limit and delete the least important details. These details distract recruiters from the main information.
- Use a simple design; your resume has to be readable and legible. Forget about impressing the recruiter with multiple fonts, formatting, images or headers and footers. The ATS may not even be able to read these. Do not use more than two fonts, simple top-bottom structure with headlines and bullets.
- Subheadings are a great way to designate sections.
- Save the file with an appropriate name; it should appear as what it is before it is opened.
